How To Download From Icloud To Mac Computer

There are two methods through which you can download your photos from iCloud. One makes use of an iCloud website while the other needs a companion software. Here’s how to download photos from iCloud photos on Windows or Mac.

Method 1: Using iCloud Website

Since we will be using the iCloud’s official website, this method will work with every computer regardless of which operating system it is running on.

  1. Head over to the iCloud.com and log in using your Apple ID.
  2. Once you logged in, click on Photos and choose the appropriate library or album where your photos are located.
  3. Now, select the photos which you want to download. You can either choose one or many by simply using the control or command key.
Note: To select all pictures, the keyboard shortcut doesn’t work so you would have to manually select each picture by holding down the control/command key.
  4. Click on the Download icon which you can see on the top right position of the window.
  5. If you’re using Chrome browser, the download should begin right away. For Firefox users, you’ll be prompted to either save the photo or open it. For Safari users, there will be two options on the screen – Unmodified Originals and Most Compatible. Choose as per your preferences.

Method 2: Using the iCloud for PC

For Windows PC:

If you don’t want to use the iCloud official website, then there is another way to download the photos to your computer. For this, you would need the official Windows software which if you don’t have, you can get it from here. Once downloaded and installed, you can go ahead and follow the steps given below.

  1. Sign in to the iCloud using your Apple ID.
  2. Once that done, you should get a prompt asking for the item you want to sync. Select the Photos and Apply the settings.
  3. Select iCloud Photo Library or My Photo Stream depending on where your photos are originally located to.
  4. Make sure you also select the Download new photos and videos to my PC. If you want you can also change the folder by using the Change button on the right side.
  5. You can now hit the Done button. This step would take a couple of minutes and your photos will automatically get downloaded to the selected folder.

How To Download Folder From Icloud To Mac

For Mac:

If you’re using the Mac, then the easiest way to download the photos from the iCloud drive is to use the inbuilt Photos application. Here is a quick guide on how you can do so.

  1. Open up the Photos app on your Mac.
  2. Select the appropriate library or album in which your photos are located.
  3. You can now select a single photo or multiple ones using the Command button. Unlike the web version, you can use the Command+A shortcut key here to select all the photos at once.
  4. After selecting the photos, click on the File option on the menu bar and then select the Export button.
  5. Now, you can either select Export (number of photos) Photos or Export Unmodified Original.
  6. Once that selected as per your preference, you will get a prompt asking for the download location.
  7. Choose the folder or location where you want it to download.

All of the above methods work effectively and you can use any one of them as per your preference. The web version will definitely come in handy when you’re using someone else’s computer and don’t want to download a software on it.

Call me old school, refer to me as a dinosaur but I don’t trust all my digital data to reside solely in cloud services such as iCloud. That’s why I use iTunes Match and iCloud, yet also have my music library on an external hard drive connected to my iMac.

iTunes Match is a service that stores all your music in iCloud—even songs imported from CDs or not purchased in the iTunes Store—and makes it available on up to 10 of your devices and computers. With iTunes Match—which costs $25 annually—you have access to your complete iTunes music library at any time.

  1. To subscribe, open iTunes and make sure you have the latest version.
  2. At the top of the iTunes window, click Store.
  3. Scroll to the bottom of the Store window.
  4. Under Features, click iTunes Match.
  5. Click the Subscribe button.
  6. Sign in with your Apple ID and password.
  7. Make sure you have a valid payment method, then click subscribe.
  8. Agree to the Apple Media Services Terms and Conditions.

Now iTunes automatically scans your iTunes library for matches. A status indicator lets you track the scan’s progress. You can manually pause and resume the scan at any time by clicking the Stop or Start button. If at any time during the matching and uploading process you lose your Internet connection or experience a power outage, iTunes will automatically resume where it left off the next time you open iTunes.

After the process finishes, you’ll see the download icon (a cloud with a downward pointing arrow) next to items that are available for download from iCloud. If you don’t see the download icon, the item is already in your local iTunes library.

Once you’ve subscribed to iTunes Match, you can download all your music to your Mac with these steps. (Note: this works under all macOS versions up through Mojave. I can’t attest to how it will work with macOS Catalina since the upcoming operating system will break up the iTunes app into separate apps for music, podcasts, and TV shows/movies.)

  1. If you have multiple Macs, pick the one you wish to store your music library on.
  2. Open iTunes and make sure iCloud Music Library is enabled in iTunes > Preferences > General.
  3. Choose Music from the dropdown menu, and select the Library tab.
  4. Go to the iTunes Preferences menu (in the top left corner of the iTunes screen)
  5. Click General and Click on the checkboxes next to iCloud Download.

Songs that aren’t already stored locally on your Mac will be designed by a cloud with a downward arrow. You can download tracks one-by-one by clicking on the cloud icon, or by selecting multiple songs and control-clicking on them, then selecting Download. Once all the songs/albums are on your Mac, take the further precaution of backing ‘em up to a second disk drive.
