DMG files are mountable Disk Image files that comprise raw block data. Typically, it is compressed, but it can also be encrypted. You don`t need any disk to make these files, though early on, it worked like this. Dec 27, 2006  No, you do not need to keep the.dmg file. I presume you've already double-clicked the file and followed through whatever installation process was presented to you(?). If so, the application will be installed - probably in your Applications folder - so you can safely delete the.dmg file.dmg files. Auto-delete a DMG file when ejecting a disk image. Yes, of course it's a very good idea to keep the.dmg's,.zip's, etc. That you might need in the future; but the internet-enabled disk images were cool, anyway (probably, they don't work anymore for security reasons; well, a.zip is almost equivalent, anyway). If you have a.DMG file on a Windows PC it's likely you have a Macintosh file and you won't be able to use what is in it. Lots of good points in this thread. I've re-thought how this should work.

Do You Have To Keep The Dmg Files In Mac

Dmg extractor. My new version of the script moves the dmg file when it is mounted. To use it, save this script to '/Library/Scripts/Folder Action Scripts/' and attach this folder action script to the /Volumes directory. Ideally, my script would trigger when you eject the disk image, but by then it's too late; the disk image is gone, and there's nothing left for AppleScript to process. I figure triggering on mount was pretty good, since I really wanted to know what dmg files I had opened or not.

Most of you didn't want to delete the dmg file. That's a good idea. My script now moves it to a dmg_archive folder. Feel free to change this to suit your needs.
